The writer and director of The Last of Us 2, Halley Gross and Neil Druckmann, stated in an interview that the end of the game could have been much darker.
“For the last act of the game, we went through several iterations, and the idea was for Ellie to kill Abby in the final denouement”.
And then, halfway there, we changed our mind: Ellie would let Abby go at the last second to show that the old Ellie, the one imbued with humanity and guided by Joel, still existed in this character who was overwhelmed by her desire for revenge.
While seeing Abby die would certainly have delighted those who have yet to recover from Joel’s death, seeing Ellie show some mental toughness to break this cycle of violence is also a nice conclusion.
Neil Druckmann added:
At first, the fact that Abby was spared didn’t seem right. But at the end of the day, it’s an honest approach to the character. The story we wanted to tell lightly changed, but our priority has always been to be fair to the character. There are certain things that we try to achieve, but that can only work if we are consistent in the writing.
This is not the first time that The Last of Us 2 end is mentioned, since last month; the writer had already admitted that the end could have been different without saying more about it, just like other aspects of the plot. Now we know this.
