Galaxy Z Fold 3 may feature an underscreen camera

Samsung plans to showcase its first under-display camera with its upcoming foldable phone, Galaxy Z Fold 3, according to a new report. Several Android manufacturers have offered solutions for under-screen cameras in recent years, but ZTE is currently the only brand to offer a commercial smartphone with this technology.
That may change soon, as Xiaomi’s third-generation under-screen camera solution goes into mass production next year. But ZTE and Xiaomi won’t be the only companies selling devices with a camera sensor placed under the screen for a long time.
Samsung is also working on the resolution of the under-display camera, and it could debut next year with the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Samsung unveiled the original Galaxy Fold early last year, and it featured a big hole in the upper right corner of the main screen for the front camera. The company then released the Galaxy Z Fold 2 in September this year, which offered a better solution with a circular hole punch.
Industry sources familiar with the matter have revealed that Samsung has finalized plans to bring under-display camera technology to market with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in the third quarter of 2021. The report also reveals that Samsung’s solution uses a special Samsung display. Display, while the image sensor is obtained from the System LSI division of Samsung Electronics.
Besides the specialized hardware, the South Korean company is also working on an image correction algorithm to improve the output of the camera placed below the screen, where light is refracted by the OLED screen layer.
The screen appears to be designed so that the area above the camera lens includes larger spaces to secure the aperture and capture images smoothly, widening the space between pixels to allow light to pass. The report also states that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be the first Samsung device with a camera placed under the screen.
The adoption of under-screen camera technology helps to solidify the position of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 as a new flagship.
